LOCAL SUPPORT GROUP WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

August 25, 2003:  The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Greater Attleboro (DBSA-Attleboro), a local peer support group for people with affective disorders such as bipolar disorder (manic-depression) and clinical depression, was awarded one of two prestigious national Chapter Service Awards given out at the organization’s annual conference in Long Beach, CA, earlier this month.  Although the current group has only been existence since 1999, DBSA-Attleboro was selected for this recognition from a field of over 250 other local chapters nationwide.

The annual DBSA Chapter Service Award recognizes chapters for their outreach and partnership efforts on behalf of people with mood disorders.  When accepting this year’s award, DBSA-Attleboro recognized the organization’s numerous area partners that have helped contribute to the group’s success to date.  Some of DBSA-Attleboro’s more prominent local partners include:  Community Care Services at Park Street, which provides a professional advisor, referrals, and the group’s voice mail services;  Hillside Adult Day Center, which hosts the group’s weekly meetings;  and the Partial Program at Arbour-Fuller Hospital, where DBSA members speak to clients on a monthly basis.

DBSA-Attleboro runs confidential support groups where people with affective disorders can speak candidly about issues and coping strategies. DBSA-Attleboro meetings take place every Tuesday night from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Hillside Adult Day Health Center, 50 Walton Street, Attleboro, MA.  Newcomers’ meetings start at 6:45 pm.  The meetings are free and open to anyone with bipolar disorder or clinical depression.  No pre-registration is required.  Further information is available on the Internet at www.dbsa-attleboro.org, via email at info@dbsa-attleboro.org, or by voice mail at 508-222-7525 extension 407.
